History of Album art

The 50s:

  • Post War baby boom became teenagers
  • Solo singers and vocal groups became popular
  • Rhythm and blues became so popular it got its won chart
  • Rock'n'roll also started early in the decade
  • Major record labels ignored rock'n'roll leading to the rise of independent record labels like Atlantic, Chess, and King
  • Elvis became very popular
  


The 60s:
  • American rock'n'roll caused revolution inspiring bands like the Beatles
  • Fun-in-the sun sound of The Beach Boys
  • Soul became popular eg Otis Redding
  • British invasion dominated the American hit parade
  • America fought back with folk-pop and pyschedelic sound
  • Hippie Culture: free love, expanded conciousness, new
     


The 70s:

  • Reflected more narcissism that 60s idealism
  • Lots of successful 60s bands broke up
  • Rise of solo singers like Michael Jackson, Elton John and Cat Stevens
  • Also more solo female singers like Olivia Newton-John, Carole King, and Linda Rionstadt
  • Hysterical heavy metal like Kiss and Led Zeppelin
  • Alice Copper produced Shock Rock hwereas David Bowie, The New York Dolls and Marc Bolan started Glitter Rock
  • Lots of other sub-genres started like jazz rock, progressive rock, and reggae became popular
  • Rocking fifties revived with films like Grease and American Grafitti
  • Saturday Night Fever sold 25 million copies with disco becoming popular while rock lost its edge
  • Disenfranchised and disenchanted punk movement was short lived but brought outrage and rebellion back into rock'n'roll
  • Very diverse
     

The 80s-90S:
  • Lots of famous singers died: John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley
  • Sony Walkman Cassette and MTV
  • Music became million dollar industry
  • People like The Who and The Eagles had come backs
  • Charity rock was started by George Harrison with his Bangladesh concert
  • Rock'n'roll became part of the establishment
  • Youthful movements like rap and hip hop tried to avoid that fate
  • New wave of punk became more musical eg Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and The Clash
  • Garage Rock transformed into grunge rock with Nirvana, Pearl Jam
  • Reggae revival
  • Most innovative development was CD and by the end of the decade vinyl was phased out
