Music Video Analysis: Taylor Swift - We are never ever getting back together

Camera:
  • Whip Pans
  • Tracks Taylor's face
  • Pauses on a secondary character while she changes
  • Tracks in and out constantly
  • When not moving it is a key moment of narrative

Sound:
  • Other people lipsynching with the 'whee'
  • Sunds of NYC at beginning
  • Playing instruments and dancing along with music

Mise En Scene:
  • Knitted Bird, wallpaper, chair, other furniture - every around her is soft and welcoming but he ruined it, she's made her own world around her, lonely so she knits
  • Bright pyjamas - she's young and innocent, not affected/depressed by break up
  • Living Room full of slightly retro furniture - stuck in the past, unable to completely move on
  • Glasses - Quirky, clever, indie
  • Boy wears dark clothes - he's the antagonist, suave, contrasts with her white and brightly coloured pyjamas, setting them up as good and evil and generally opposites
  • Band wear woodland animal costumes - quirky
  • White instruments - quirky, cool
  • Crowd of friends pop up - friends there to support her, people are on her side
  • Glasses - Hipster, clever
  • Image on TV - famous, more important than him, people listen to her
  • Red and white spotty shirt - fifties, matches his red hoodie
  • Two coffee cups - sociable, she is using hers because she puts more into the relationship than him
  • Goes through different spaces in house - feels trapped, their life together is restrictive

Editing:
  • There may be unseeable cuts, but most of the work is done by the performers, the set and the camera
