Music Video Analysis: Gabrielle Aplin - Panic Cord

Gabrielle Aplin's music video for 'Panic Cord' shows the breakdown of her and her boyfriend's relationship, through the use of contrasting scenes; them having fun together, and them not getting on. As Gabrielle picks out something from her box, it relates to a memory of their relationship, and as the video progresses, we can see how the relationship digresses, and they grow increasingly unhappy.

The performance shots of Aplin during the video show her either lying on her bed or by the window. The fact that she falls back onto her bed at the start could show her frustration with the relationship, whereas when she performs by the window, she seems wistful and thoughtful, and perhaps even regrets that she let him go - which reflects the whole on/off theme of the video.

The mise-en-scene helps to connote whether their relationship is going well or not at the time. The frequent use of flowers, for example, shows that he is trying to impress her/apologise, and the romantic gesture makes her smile. The baking shots highlight that they are a happy couple as baking is a very homely activity, suggesting that they are quite serious. The fact that they bake playfully, however, suggests that they are not too deep in the relationship and that they're just having a bit of fun. The fire in the marshmallow scene seems comforting, as sitting by the fire is a comforting experience, however the fire also imply that it is cold, perhaps even winter outside - which could reflect how they're hot then they're cold.

Overall, although they seem to be having fun in a lot of the scenes in the video, their relationship seems to be unfulfilled. The use of the jigsaw, and the fact that Aplin holds up the jigsaw piece and looks disappointed could connote that he was not the final jigsaw piece for her, and something was always missing from their relationship. In the pub scene, Aplin is out of focus while her boyfriend is in focus, laughing at his phone, highlighting how he wasn't paying attention to her and that his phone was more interesting to him than her at the time. When her boyfriend gives her a piggy back, although they are smiling and laughing, they almost fall over a lot and don't seem to be very stable, which could be another metaphor for their relationship; fun, but unstable. The use of the messy, unmade bed could be a symbol of their messy relationship. Finally, the twilight natural lighting at the end of the video highlights the end of the day, and the end of their relationship.
