Floor Plans with Timecodes

When planning our one shot, we found that storyboards were not the best way to illustrate what would happen across the duration of the music video, therefore we decided to use floor plans and sketches of the sets, accompanied by the timecodes that the props would go on the screen.

Potential Costumes

We need three 50s style outfits for our music video (one for each setup). Mila tried on a variety of dresses, shirts and skirts, and whilst discussing what looked good, we also had to consider which outfits Mila could easily change into/out of as we are doing quick changes between set ups.

Studio Run Through

This is a rehearsal that we did in the Seward Studio, while trying out lighting setups. This is our main setup for the park and boat scenes, and we have booked another session so we can try and work out the café lighting setup.

Using Social Media

We decided to use twitter to promote our artist early on in our project, so that by tweeting we could build up interest in our artist and create a personality for her that would emphasize her branding. It also meant that we could interact with people who were fans of the genre or of similar artists, like Sia. This enabled us to gain a greater understanding of what out target audience looked for and liked about artists of the genre, and why they would be attracted to a particular artist.

Ava's Twitter: https://twitter.com/AvaOfficial2013

We created a facebook page for Ava where she posts news and updates for fans, and by 'liking' it they can engage with the artist and the wider fan community. This was particularly important for Ava's teenage fans who are our target audience, as younger people tend to spend a lot of time on facebook and it is still the number one social networking site.

Ava's facebook: https://www.facebook.com/avaofficial2013

We then created her both a tumblr. and a blog on blogger. Through both of these 'Ava' can post pictures and thoughts to once again build up a sense of her artist identity, for instance reblogging a picture of a London sunrise on tumblr. connoted her british identity. We could also post 'promotional pictures' on it, but similarly to Ava's tweets we write her blogs in the first person, allowing new fans a sense of her personality and helping encourage them to connect with her. Many other celebrities have tumblr. such as Lorde and Jamie Campbell Bower, in other words stars whose images/star identities primarily target teenagers and especially teenage girls.

From our research we found that many similar artists, such as 'A Fine Frenzy' have their own blog which fans can follow and learn more about the artist and their interests from. We created a BlogSpot site for Ava, with the same URL as her tumblr - theoneandonlyava - to achieve synergy across the different platforms.

Ava's Blog: http://theoneandonlyava.blogspot.co.uk/

We also created a Youtube channel for her, where she has posted some videos of her practicing the choreography for her debut music video for 'He Wasn't There'. These videos will heighten the interactivity and immersion for the audience as the fans can dance along to the choreography and attempt to learn the moves. We hope to later upload some behind-the-scenes videos from the music video shoot on Ava's channel, for more immersion, and also so that the audience can see what Ava is like when she isn't performing and just chatting to the camera, highlighting her loving and fun identity.

We also used these methods to gain international fans as social media builds communities of fans around the world, and we received hits on Ava's blogs and tweets from people in Asia, America and all over Europe, taking our fanbase further than its British focus.

We put links to all of our social networking sites when creating our website, to increase the interactivity and to help fans immerse themselves in Ava's world.

Choreography

Here is a run through of the complete one shot, with specific choreography on the three sets. We still need to work on choreography for Ava in the choruses, but consistent rehearsals, along with other cast and crew members should secure this choreography for our first shoot on 16th November.

We also will need to practice in the studio with all our props laid out and ready to use as part of the choreography.

This was an initial video of some shots we cut together where we were practising specific aspects of the choreography - the main things to consider in this video are the choreography for the two backing dancers and the way in which the quick change is due to take place.

Letter we gave to helpers

Dear

For our (Anna, Emily L, Mila and Sharlene) A-Level media project, we are making a one shot music video, starring Ava and we would like you to act in it. Our idea is to create an obviously fake set in the Seward studio, and change the props and furniture to create 3 different stereotypically romantic settings as the video goes on. We would like you to be one of the background characters who move the sets and play minor (but funny) roles in the narrative.

We having a test shoot for our music video on Saturday 15th, our proper shoot on Saturday 23rd and we have reserved a back up shoot on Saturday 30th. We may not need the shoot on the 30th to film if the other shoots go well. On the days of the shoot we will arrive at 8, but you can sleep in a bit longer and arrive at 9 and it will end at either 1 or at 3-4 on school play days, but we may finish before then. We will email you about any changes to or questions about the schedule.

The actual shoot will involve moving props, doing small background roles such as throwing a globe or being in a superhero costume. We would ask costume wise that you wear all one colour eg purple jeans, purple top, or blue skirt, blue tights and blue top much like in Feist’s ‘1234’ music, and if you don’t want to travel in them there are changing facilities.

The shoot will involve many short breaks and one longer lunch break, so you might want to bring snacks and drinks along, but some food will be provided.

Please fill in the form and return it to Anna, Emily, Mila or Sharlene. Your help is much appreciated!

Thank you,

Group 2!

Our Album Art Idea

With our album art, we want to draw on the theme of appearance vs. reality so that there is synergy between the album and the music video (as the constructed set in the video implies fakery, and she attempts to escape this façade at the end). Drawing on our knowledge of album art, we will use the front sleeve to attract and entertain, the middle sleeves to provide immersion for the audience, and the back sleeve to inform. In having Ava wearing an array of 50s dresses and pulling cute expressions, we will also establish her identity through the album art.

Front Sleeve:
  • On the front sleeve, we will have Ava leaning on a large frame - drawing on the iconic Grace Kelly photo (a popular culture reference).
  • We will have the album name in a speech bubble (also key iconography in our video), drawing on Roy Lichtenstein's 50s pop-art.
  • Her name, 'Ava', will be in a decorative typeface.
Middle Left Sleeve:
  • Drawing on appearance vs. reality, on this sleeve we intend to see the image on the front sleeve but from the back.
  • The message in the speech bubble on the back will contradict the album name in the speech bubble at the front.
  • Through the frame, we will see what Ava sees.
Middle Right Sleeve:
  • On this sleeve, we will have Ava looking out of a variety of frames, probably circular shaped (similar to submarine or rocket windows).
  • She will be pulling a different expression in each frame to highlight the different sides to her character.
Back Sleeve:
  • As with all albums, we will have the track-list on the back, written in the same font as the album name to provide synergy, and promote the brand.
  • We will also have some more frame photos (like on the middle right sleeve)

History of Album art

  • Saturday Night Fever sold 25 million copies with disco becoming popular while rock lost its edge
  • Disenfranchised and disenchanted punk movement was short lived but brought outrage and rebellion back into rock'n'roll
